The Work
The work was hard under unimagineablly difficult conditions.
The Bridges were some of the biggest challenges. The rivers are often very wide with multiple meandering channels. They froze all the way to the bottom, and when they thawed the pressure from upstream meant that "break up" often came with violent explosions of ice sending big blocks of ice downstream. Some bridges had to be rebuilt each spring. All of the original bridges have been replaced with up to four generations of more modern bridges in use now.
